Carter’s bio is below:
My name is Carter Kha. I am a Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Major at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. In my time in UWEC, I have gained skills that allow me to develop critical thinking about the intersections of gender and sexuality with other power and privilege such as race, ethnicity, ability, and class. With the community I have been apart of, I have had the blessing of being supported by my peers and family. Because of them, I have been able to pursue my work in community based organizing and to center the communities where I am from.
The focus of my research is: Home and Homebuilding: Documenting Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC) in Predominantly White Institutions (PWI). Since entering school, I have been learning the ways how power operate however I wanted to focus on how do people come together. My activism, advocacy, and research wanted to fill in the gap of what was missing when I entered spaces: not seeing more people like me. I often was the token Queer and Trans person or I was the token Person of Color and it was frustrating to see the lack of support and acknowledgement for QTPOC. Because of these two unique experiences that was happening to me, I created my research that center QTPOC experiences lead by a QTPOC.
In the future, I want to pursue a higher education, however at the moment, I want to go back and do more organizational work. I have been so focused in my studies that I have not been able to do much organizing work.
