Women in American Agriculture: Then vs. Now

Women in American Agriculture: Then vs. Now

This poster will look at the role of women in agriculture from the foundation of the United States into the 21st century. The broad nature of agriculture and its affiliated careers provide about 11% of U.S. employment. Thus it is essential to begin looking at the diversity of agriculture and how it has altered and shifted over the past 244 years. This project will look at the demographic shifts of women in agricultural careers over the past two centuries of American history. Providing descriptions of women’s involvement in agriculture during the time will also be included, so we might be able to understand how women’s roles have changed in relation to agriculture and farming systems. It is important to comprehend these shifts so there can be a better understanding of women’s relationships with agriculture and how to improve inclusion and diversity of agriculture where it is needed most.
