Student Resource Spotlight: Women’s Resource Center at UW-Milwaukee

What is the name of your center, and where can students find you?

We are the Women’s Resource Center at UW-Milwaukee. We are located in the Student Union, EG37. Students can find us on Instagram @uwmwrc

How long has your centerbeen around? What is its history?

The Women’s Resource Center became an official campus organization in 1993; before that, there was a lot of feminist work being done on campus. This work consisted of collaborations between radical student organizations and the Women’s Studies department. As recent as the 1990s, all the way back to the university’s founding, there was a much more palpable presence of such groups. The existence of those first feminist radical groups set a precedence for something like the Women’s Resource Center to follow.

The resource center was the first of its kind on campus, meaning that it was the first demographic targeted student resource center. Through campus advocacy by the Women’s Issues Committee, Women’s Faculty Caucus, among others, the WRC was able to come to fruition with their commitment.

Students should come to you for…

Warm connections to campus and community resources for women, including healthcare, parenting needs, lactation space information, victim advocates for those who have faced violence, and more.

We also have free menstrual hygiene supplies, pregnancy tests, safer sex supplies, a feminist lending library, comfortable couches, and a tv with streaming services. The Women’s Resource Center is also a great space to connect with new friends on campus, we have so many events students can check out.
