Araceli Alonso is Co-Director of the UNESCO Chair on Gender, Wellbeing and Culture of Peace at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a Distinguished Senior Lecturer in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, and a faculty member at the School of Medicine and Public Health where she lectures and researches on women’s health and women’s rights. Alonso is the Director for Gender, Health and Clinical Practice of the University of Wisconsin’s research-to-action and local-to-global 4W-STREETS (Social Transformation to End the Exploitation and Trafficking for Sex) at the School of Human Ecology. Dr. Alonso is also the Founder and Director of the United Nations Award Winning Nikumbuke-Health by Motorbike (N-HbM), a comprehensive health program for women and girls that provides health literacy and basic medical services to women and girls from remote and isolated rural communities in Africa. Alonso has extensive scholarship and practice on Gender, Global Health and Human Rights in the United States, Spain, Morocco, Cuba, Uganda, and Kenya.

 

Esperanza Jorge Barbuzano is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cádiz, Spain, with a contract from the European Commission “Marie Skłodowska-Curie” to research and study migration and human trafficking in Central America. Barbuzano holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies in Didactics and Theory of Education from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. Her main lines of research are migration, gender, and human trafficking. Her studies also focus on the development of methodologies for the construction of life-stories in contexts of imposed silence. Barbuzano has conducted field work on various borders with young people and women who travel migratory borders. For her studies, Barbuzano has made international stays at the Universities of Abdelmalek Essaadi, in Morocco; Università degli Studi di Palermo, in Italy; Nova do Lisboa, in Portugal; and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the United States.
